Col's Construction Blog

Hello! Welcome to my blog. My name is Col. I live in Perth and I have a passion for construction. I am pretty useless when it comes to construction work so I tend to leave it to the experts. However, I find that there is nothing more pleasing than seeing a team of construction workers complete a job. Over the years, I have hired many different types of construction worker and they have all taken the time to chat with me. During these conversations, I have learnt so pretty interesting things which I will be exploring on this blog. Enjoy!

Two tips for preventing accidents and injuries when using your garage's roller door

Ethan Burton

If you want to ensure that neither you nor your family is injured as a result of operating your garage's roller door, you might want to keep the following tips in mind.

Invest in a garage roller door opener

One of the best ways to minimise your chances of being hurt when you are entering or leaving your garage is to invest in a garage roller door opener. This will enable you to open and close the door from a distance by simply pressing a button on a remote control device.

There are a couple of reasons why a door opener could prevent you or other household members getting hurt when you enter or exit your garage. Firstly, if you don't have to stand close to the door in order to manually pull it down, there is no risk of one of your feet getting trapped and crushed between the bottom of the door and the ground. Secondly, if you don't have to physically touch the door, there will be no chance of your hands being lacerated by you brushing them against a sharp crack or splintered section on the door's surface.

Don't try to squeeze past the door while it is being closed

If another member of your household is attempting to close the roller door (using the aforementioned door opener), you should never try to squeeze through the shrinking gap (in order to leave or enter the garage). If you move too slowly, you could get stuck in the space between the ground and the door.

If the person who pressed the button on the device does not immediately notice what has happened and reopen the door, the roller door could continue to move downwards while you are trapped underneath it. This could lead to you sustaining numerous fractures and being badly lacerated by the edge of the door. As such, regardless of how much of a rush you happen to be in, it is vital to never attempt to enter or exit your garage while its door is being shut.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone in your home who is likely to use the door opener to not drive or walk away from the garage until they have seen that the door has been fully closed; this will ensure that if anyone else does try to squeeze past whilst the door is in motion, the person with the remote opener will see what has happened and immediately open the door.
