Commercial Painting: Essential Tips for Creating a Smooth Finish

Ethan Burton

Painting can improve the appeal of your commercial space. However, if the final finish is not smooth and clean, the surfaces will appear messy and unattractive. In addition, a bumpy coat is more prone to peeling and delamination. Therefore, you should hire commercial painters to ensure that the coating is smooth and durable. If you have a small commercial space and would like to reduce your improvement costs by handling the painting work yourself, you must uphold the right practices when painting. Here are practical tips for creating a smooth and flawless surface.

Refine the Primer by Sanding

Priming is an essential step because it creates a base which promotes adherence of the paint. However, it can also cause the final finish to be unappealing. If the primer coat is bumpy or rough, the final finish will be affected. Therefore, you should check the condition of the primer coating before proceeding with your painting. If the surface is rough, you should use fine-grit sandpaper or sanding sponges to refine the surface after the primer dries. This process should improve the texture of the paint.

Consider Using Additives

Thick paint is durable and resilient for commercial use. However, its appeal can be lacking. In simple terms, when thick paint is applied onto a surface, it tends to settle in clumps, creating a rough and bumpy finish. You can minimise this aesthetics problem by purchasing finer paint for your improvement project. Also, you can use specialty additives. Paint additives will make the painting fluid less gummy, minimising the risk of clumping on walls. In addition, additives will slow down the drying process, allowing for even curing.

Apply Thin Coats

Painting can be a time-consuming process, and it can be tempting to finish the work as fast as possible. Unfortunately, handling the work in a hurry can be highly detrimental. If you apply thick coatings to reduce the number of layers required for ideal results, you might find that your walls appear unrefined and rough. Thick layers of paint tend to dry poorly, and the finish is not usually smooth. You can prevent these issues by using multiple thin layers of paint for a clean and beautiful look.

Finally, you should plan on straining the paint to eliminate globs of hardened material. Usually, when the can of paint is opened, the fluid is clean and free of contaminants. However, the paint can become contaminated due to contact with the immediate environment. You should purchase a strainer to eliminate these globs for a smooth finish.
